Why Legacy Platforms Fall Short

JoyClub has millions of users, but honestly? They haven't updated meaningfully in over 15 years. If you're a couple, one of you has to log out so the other can use the app. That's insane in 2025. Fake profiles are everywhere because the verification is a joke. And the search still works like it's 2008.

Have you tried using JoyClub or similar platforms recently? I have. The interfaces look like they were frozen in 2005. Couple profiles that force you to share one login. Fake accounts everywhere because verification barely exists. Search that hasn't improved in 15 years. SparkChambers is my attempt to build what these platforms should have been all along.

Not a shared account with one login. Real STI (Single Table Inheritance) architecture where SoloUser and CoupleUser are distinct types. Both partners can be logged in simultaneously on different devices. Messages show who actually sent them. Profile visibility can differ between partners.

Multi-Step Verification

Three-tier verification: photo upload, video selfie, and human review. Each step increases trust score and unlocks features. Fake profiles can't survive this pipeline. Verification status is visible to other users.

What I Learned

Building for couples first changes everything. Most platforms bolt on couple support as an afterthought. Starting with STI architecture meant rethinking every feature from scratch.

Real-time features are table stakes now. Users expect instant messaging, presence, and live updates. ActionCable makes this achievable without a separate infrastructure.

Verification is a feature, not friction. When users trust the platform, they engage more. The extra steps are worth it.
